Square: No, We Haven't Been in Acquisition Talks

Just a few months ago, most rumors about Square focused on the possibility of an IPO, but the narrative has shifted more recently to the possibility of the mobile payments startup being sold.

The Information reported earlier this month that Google had studied an acquisition of Square, but the report stopped short of stating the two companies had actually been in talks. A few days later, Re/code reported that both Google and Apple had weighed acquisition bids for Square, but that report too noted "no firm offers have been made so far."

The Wall Street Journal came out with the most strongly-worded acquisition rumor yet on Monday. According to the report, Square executives met with Google in 2012 about a possible sale, and the startup has also had "informal discussions" with Apple and eBay. Read more...
