Internet Freedom Crackdown: China Jails Blogger, Shuts Down Sites

China is stepping up its long-running crackdown on Internet freedom this week, launching a new campaign to purge the web of porn while jailing a blogger for spreading "rumors" online.

Qin Zhihui, a blogger with a large following, was sentenced on Thursday to three years in jail for posting inaccurate reports on Sina Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter, according to news reports. He is the first Chinese netizen to be sent to jail under an anti-rumors law enacted last year

Qin, 30, was arrested in August and accused of defaming celebrities and the Chinese government, as well as spreading several rumors on Sina Weibo, according to the state news agency Xinhua, which defines him as a "rumormonger," and an "Internet celebrity" with "only high-school education."
