Young Girls Depict History's Most Influential Women

Photographer Eunique Jones Gibson began the "Because of Them, We Can" series in February 2013 as a month-long art campaign for Black History Month. From the start, Gibson set out to empower young kids — kids like her two sons, Chase and Amari

"[The] campaign was inspired by my own two sons ... and the desire to create imagery for them and children like them that would refute stereotypes and build their self-esteem by connecting them to heroes past and present who have and continue to pave the way," Gibson told Mashable.
