Elon Musk Plans to Make a Real-Life Bond Submarine

Elon Musk is planning to one-up James Bond by turning the Lotus Esprit submarine, the aquatic vehicle made famous in The Spy Who Loved Me, into an actual drivable submarine.

The movie vehicle was converted for use in the water, but fins prevented it from driving again once it had taken a dive. Musk bought it for around $997,000, according to the Guardian, and plans to turn it into the vehicle of his childhood dreams.

"It was amazing as a little kid in South Africa to watch James Bond in The Spy Who Loved Me drive his Lotus Esprit off a pier, press a button and have it transform into a submarine underwater," Musk said in a statement provided to Mashable by Tesla Motors, one of two companies where he is CEO. "I was disappointed to learn that it can't actually transform. What I'm going to do is upgrade it with a Tesla electric powertrain and try to make it transform for real." Read more...
