Apple App Store Introduces Legacy App Download Option

Apple iPads, iPhones and iPods have been around long enough that some of the newer versions of iOS no longer work on them. Case in point: A first-generation iPad works with iOS 5.1.1, but nothing above. This also means that some apps, which developers are constantly updating, no longer work on legacy iOS versions and the hardware that supports them. Until now.

On Tuesday, Apple quietly introduced a new way for consumers to access previous App editions for their aging hardware. It works quite simply: You select the app you want in the App Store and, if it's incompatible with your iOS version, a prompt will appear offering to let you download a previous, compatible version of the app. Read more...
