Apple Buys AlgoTrim, a Data Compression Startup

Apple has acquired AlgoTrim, a Swedish startup that develops data compression technology. The terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

The acquisition was first reported by Rapidus, a Swedish publication, which notes that all shares in the company were bought by Delaware-based holding company representing Apple back in February

Apple confirmed the acquisition to Mashable with its generic statement: "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans."

AlgoTrim was founded in 2005 and initially focused on developing codecs for feature phones, but now works with smartphones. On its website, the company describes itself as developing "advanced solutions for mobile devices within the fields of data compression, mobile imaging and video and computer graphics." Read more...
