For Steve Acree, running a small business at times seems like a life of almost daily improvisation

Looking back over Acree's career, a pattern emerges of sharp decisions in which he seized opportunities many others wouldn't see

It all started with an interest. A movie fan, Acree got so into DVDs in the 90s that he tracked down a local distributor in his Memphis hometown to get them on the cheap. "I called them up and acted like I was in the business forever," he says. Then he started selling the DVDs on eBay. Business was great until bootlegs from China eviscerated the market. His profits dwindling, Acree learned from a roommate at the time that there was good money in selling audio equipment for professionals — stuff like amplifiers, DJ gear, subwoofers and snake cables. After his roommate got a college degree and moved on to something else, Acree began selling the equipment full time and called his company Seismic Audio. Read more...
