At 132,000 miles per hour, Perseid meteoroids slam into Earth's atmosphere, bursting into flames to create one of the most stunning nighttime sky displays.

While the black and white video above may seem less exciting than a full-color HD view, the color and quality has a purpose. The network's eight cameras — which are located throughout the United States — record specialized black and white videos because they allow for a rare glimpse of the entire night sky. The cameras have overlapping fields of view, so more than one camera can detect the same fireball. This allows scientists to determine height and speed. Read more...
