Wave at Saturn as NASA Snaps Photo of Earth Today
Set your alarm for Friday afternoon to look up at the sky and wave as NASA's Cassini spacecraft snaps photos of the Earth from Saturn.
Currently orbiting Saturn nearly 900 million miles away from Earth, Cassini will take photos on July 19 between 5:27 and 5:42 p.m. EDT. NASA is making a major social push to encourage people to be part of the historic image
While your face won't technically appear in the photo, Saturn's unique position makes this moment particularly special because it will be backlit by the sun, making the whole planet visible. It is one of the most exciting — not to mention rare — Cassini events this year.
The Cassini Earth portrait is part of a more extensive mosaic of the Saturn system. "The viewing geometry highlights the tiniest of ring particles and will allow scientists to see patterns within Saturn's dusty rings," according to NASA.
