Did Red Equal Sign Avatars Affect Court's Marriage Decisions?

More than 10 million Facebook and Twitter users changed their avatars to a red equal sign in support of marriage equality earlier this year. The social media activity lined up with changing opinions towards gay marriage in the United States overall: In a 2012 Pew poll, more people said they supported same-sex marriage than opposed it for the first time ever.

Fast forward to today, and many of the same social media users who adopted the avatar were celebrating the Supreme Court's twin decisions in support of same-sex marriage. Can any credit for the court's rulings be given to the little red avatars? Maybe, but probably not.
