Congratulations, hash symbol. You've come a long, long way. Remember when we used to call you a pound sign or a number sign? Remember when people used to confuse you with the musical symbol for sharp?

Well, no longer. After conquering Twitter over the last six years — thanks to early power user Chris Messina, who first suggested hashtags — you're about to become a familiar sight to the billion-plus users of Facebook, too. Perhaps a little too familiar

Two questions remain to be answered, hash symbol: Will you be overused? And were you really necessary on Facebook in the first place?
