Yahoo's Weather App Uses Flickr To Show You Weather Conditions

Ever wonder what a sunny day in Maui looks like? How about a cloudy day in Seattle?

Yahoo announced a new standalone calendar app Thursday — Yahoo! Weather for iPhone — that uses location-specific images to show you what weather conditions look like around the world at any given time, all right from your smartphone.

"Today what we do is read the weather. You're looking a numbers on a chart, and you're basically reading," Adam Chen, Yahoo's SVP of Mobile and Emerging Products told Mashable. "The idea is that most of us when we experience weather we really want to see the weather."

Rather than just show you weather data points, the app incorporates Flickr photos from locations as well, giving you a visual representation of weather conditions. Beautiful images are displayed full screen, and have weather information overlaid when in portrait mode. In landscape mode photos are displayed without any accompanying information except the name of the photographer, the idea being that you might flip though images like postcards. Read more...
