'New York' Magazine Coming to iPad

New York magazine took its time readying an optimized edition for the iPad, the Apple tablet device that first arrived in U.S. stores three years ago, but it may well have been worth the wait.

After releasing what NYMag.com General Manager Michael Silberman calls a "PDF replica" of the weekly title in mid-2011, New York decided to go back to the drawing board, hiring NYC-based design firm The Wonderfactory in early 2012 to develop a richer version, which debuts in Apple's Newsstand Monday.

The app arguably brings together the weekly magazine and its website better than any other magazine app that has attempted the same (The Atlantic's, for instance, or Sports Illustrated's). Open the app, and you'll be presented with a lighter version of the NYMag.com homepage in the top half, and a preview of the weekly magazine in the lower. Simply slide the middle divider up or down to get the content you want. While you're reading the magazine portion, you can pull the divider back down to check for fresh content on the website.
