Jeff Bezos Resurrects Lost Apollo 11 Engines From Ocean Floor

Apollo-11-engine

On a fateful day in 1969, five F-1 engines gave Apollo 11 the 1.5 million pounds of thrust it needed to leave Earth's atmosphere and head to the moon. Just minutes after liftoff, those engines plunged into the Atlantic Ocean as planned — and there they sat, three miles below the surface for more than 40 years.

Amazon Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos made it his mission, in 2012, to find and resurrect the F-1 engines. Now, after three weeks at sea, Bezos is making his way to Cape Canaveral with the priceless engines safely in tow (see photos below).

"We’ve seen an underwater wonderland — an incredible sculpture garden of twisted F-1 engines that tells the story of a fiery and violent end, one that serves testament to the Apollo program," he wrote in a personal blog post
