Feds Charge Reuters Editor With Aiding Anonymous Attack

The world of social media journalism was in shock Thursday after Matthew Keys — deputy social media editor for Reuters — received a federal indictment alleging that he helped Anonymous hack his former employers.

Keys, 26, is a popular figure on Twitter, with 23,000 followers and a reputation for tweeting breaking news. (Full disclosure: though I don't know him personally, several of my colleagues at Mashable do. We've reached out to him for comment.)

A grand jury indictment, filed Thursday by the U.S. attorney in Sacramento, charges that Keys gave Anonymous hackers the means to break into Tribune Company servers in 2010 and vandalize their sites. Tribune owns a number of media properties including the Los Angeles Times and Fox 40, a local TV station
