Fact One: Pies Were Once Called "Coffins"

Appetizing, right? For years, pastry shells were primarily used as edible containers for foods that were too difficult or messy to eat. Some of the earliest pies were filled with meat and had tall, straight-sided crust walls that sealed on top — similar to Shepherd's Pie today. The name "coffin" (or "coffyn") actually meant basket.
