Harvard Secretly Searched Campus Emails in Internal Investigation

Harvard University secretly scoured the email accounts of 16 resident deans last fall, in an attempt to find out the origin of a media leak. After the investigation was revealed by the Boston Globe on Saturday, surprised faculty members, professors, and alumni voiced their discontent, citing privacy concerns.

The case serves as a reminder that privacy when using an employee email account or computer, is severely limited

Everything started in the summer of 2012, when news reports indicated that Harvard was investigating a sprawling cheating scandal involving several students who allegedly collaborated on and plagiarized a take-home exam in a government class earlier that year. The investigation was reported in the media thanks to a leaked message from a closed-door meeting of the Administrative Board, the body in charge of investigating the scandal
