Report: Huawei Is Now the Worlds No. 3 Smartphone Maker

China's Huawei more than doubled its market share over the last year to become the world's third largest smartphone maker by units, according to a new report by IDC. Huawei joins familiar names like Samsung (#1), Apple (#2) and Sony (#4), but holding the fifth position is another upstart from China: ZTE.

Overall, the worldwide mobile phone market grew 1.9% year-over-year in the fourth quarter of 2012 as vendors shipped 482.5 million of the devices, IDC reports. Of course, a huge area of growth was smartphones, though the increase of 36.4% came in slightly below IDC's previous forecast of 39.5% for the quarter.
