Facebook Reportedly to Release Its Own Snapchat Competitor

Facebook is preparing to release its own version of Snapchat, the photo and messaging app whose contents expire within 10 seconds, according to a report.

The company plans to release the app "in the coming weeks," according to AllThingsD. Reps from Facebook could not be reached for comment.

Snapchat has been one of the runaway success stories of 2012. Launched in September 2011, the app has been used for more than a billion total "snaps," the company's founder, Evan Spiegel, told Mashable in October. Spiegel also said at the time that the app receive 20 million snaps a day.
