EU Settles Price-Fixing Investigation With Apple, Publishers


The European Commission has reached a settlement with Apple and four book publishers, ending a year-long investigation into whether the fives parties have been fixing e-book prices.

In September 2011, European regulators began investigating claims that certain publishers - Simon & Schuster (CBS Corp., USA), HarperCollins (News Corp., USA), Hachette Livre (Lagardre Publishing, France), Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holzbrinck (owner of Macmillan, Germany) and Penguin (Pearson Group, United Kingdom) --had priced their e-books in a way that prevented booksellers from selling books more cheaply than Apple, violating EU antitrust rules.
