When entering a dangerous situation, movie characters warn, "If I'm not back in an hour, call the police." Meet the app equivalent. With Checkon.me, set emergency contacts from your address book, then set an alarm. If you don't check in before the designated time, the app alerts your contacts. There is also a panic button in case of unexpected danger. It works even if your phone gets turned off at some point, and will even tell your contact the last known location of your phone.

Instagram, Twitter and Facebook were, without a doubt, the most talked about apps of 2012, but they're not what we consider the top apps of the year.

Newcomers like Zeebox and Ad Hawk weren't part of everyday conversation for most smartphone users, but we feel they should be.
