HP and Yahoo: A Tale of Two Iffy Comebacks


Hewlett-Packard and Yahoo's paths seem to be cosmically intersecting. Very soon, Yahoo's market valuation may eclipse HP's as the two follow what in the short term looks like opposite trajectories. HP's stock is at its lowest level in a decade, while Yahoo's is the highest it's been in 18 months.

The stakes are relatively low in this race. HP's current valuation -- about $23 billion -- is less than the amount Apple's market value increased by on Monday alone. Yet, HP is poised to supplant Yahoo as a wholesale provider of tech schadenfreude, a commodity with seemingly endless demand. The real competition is for the title of Silicon Valley's reigning basket case.
