Nokia Shows Off the Future of Maps With Here

On stage at a maps event in San Francisco Tuesday, Nokia CEO Steven Elop announced a new name for its location services: Here.

Over the past year Nokia has seen usage of its maps grow by a factor of 75. The first company to digitally map the seven continents, Nokias location data currently powers 4 in 5 cars that have in-dash navigation systems, and is the data behind a number of mapping services such as Bing, Mapquest, and Yahoo! Maps.

Nokia currently uses more than 80,000 data sources to generate updates for its maps, which include not only turn-by-turn directions but also public-transportation data, and information about local businesses and attractions.
