Prince of Persia Designer Releases Remake of His First Game, Karateka


Famous game designer Jordan Mechner released a re-imagining of Karateka Wednesday. The rhythmic beat-em-up was originally released in 1984 for the Apple II and has received a significant update for its indie release.

Karateka was Mechner's first game, which he created by himself when he studied at Yale. He's best known for creating the Prince of Persia franchise, which was first released on the Apple II and later the Nintendo Entertainment System. It spawned a series of games across console generations and a movie, all of which Mechner had a hand in.

Karateka represents a diversion from Prince of Persia, and it wasn't a game Mechner always expected to find a new audience.
