5 Fascinating Facts We Learned From Reddit This Week


1. The Zildjian cymbal company is nearly 400 years old.




A 17th century Armenian alchemist named Avedis stumbled upon a musical alloy in his quest to turn tin, copper and silver into gold. Sultan Osman II dubbed him "Zildjian," a Turkish word meaning "cymbal maker," and so began the family business in 1623. It's among the oldest contiguous companies in the world.For generations, the cymbals were used to frighten the enemies of the Ottoman Empire in battle. It wasn't until the 19th century when they got all musical and started showing up in crappy garage bands.
