An Inspiring 1971 Letter From Helen Gurley Brown to Young Readers
In 1971, an enthusiastic librarian from Troy, Michigan sent out dozens of letters to people of note in the arts, sciences and politics asking them to share a few words of reading wisdom with local children. Troy was preparing to open the states first public library and librarian Marguerite Hart hoped the responses would spark a love of reading for the citys youngsters.

Ninety-seven people wrote back, including longtime Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Helen Gurley Brown. Brown, who passed away this week at age 90, wished the kids Happy exploring! on their new library adventure.
