Google Allies With French Authors, Shuts Out Apple and Amazon





Google settled a long-running copyright dispute over its book-scanning project in France Monday.

The resolution could make thousands of out-of-print French language works available globally for the first time.

The lawsuit, brought against Google in 2006 by the French Publishers Association and the Societe des Gens de Lettres (SGDL), an association of 6,000 French-speaking authors, contested Google's efforts to scan books and make them available freely on the Internet. They contended the project was in violation of copyright law.
